Bess Maxwell Elementary School
Bess Maxwell Elementary School serves Kindergarten-5th grade students and families in the heart of the beautiful Northern California coastal community of Crescent City. The school houses a state-sponsored preschool, offers classes for students with special needs, including those with IEP and 504 plans and speech challenges, offers music classes to all K-5 students, offers no-cost breakfast, lunch and after-school programs and hosts the Del Norte County Hmong Cultural Center. Students enjoy a school library, 1-to-1 access to computers in Grades 3-5, in addition to a technology lab and a Science/Art lab. Bess Maxwell practices Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), taking a restorative approach in teaching and responding to student behavior needs. Bess Maxwell students take part in monthly awards assemblies, off-campus field trips, Reading Picnic, school and district spelling bee, Multi-Cultural Day and various PTSO and school-sponsored events.
Bess Maxwell offers students an all-inclusive, standards-based education that focuses on the “whole child”. Instructional practices at the school emphasize literacy and mathematics by utilizing engaging and innovative curriculum supported by engaging online learning opportunities. Bess Maxwell is very proud of the diversity of our school community and honors different cultures by observing many traditions throughout the school year.
